Mason Technology Partners with Azenta Life Sciences to Deliver Automated Cold Storage Solutions in Ireland

Mason Technology has announced a new partnership with Azenta Life Sciences, a global leader in automated sample management technologies. The agreement brings Azenta’s automated cold storage platforms to laboratories across Ireland. As a result, Mason Technology strengthens its offering in high-throughput, temperature-controlled sample management.

Azenta supports sample management at scale for leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology organisations globally, including 10 of the top 10 pharma/biotech companies. In addition, across its broader sample management business, Azenta supports more than one billion samples across research, clinical, and manufacturing environments. Globally, its installed base of automated storage systems supports over 650 million samples.As a result, these systems are deployed in high-throughput environments where reliability is critical, enabling secure sample management and retrieval over extended operational lifecycles.

The partnership is focused on supporting organisations managing large and complex sample collections, particularly within pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, clinical laboratories, and biobanking environments where sample integrity, traceability, and scalability are critical.

Focus on Automated Cold and Ultra-Low Temperature Storage

As part of this partnership, Mason Technology will supply Azenta’s automated storage systems designed for high-value sample management across key temperature ranges: 

• Room Temperature to -20°C Automated Storage Systems for controlled, high-throughput sample handling 
• Automated Ultra-Low Temperature (ULT) Systems (-80°C) for long-term preservation of biological samples 
• Automated Cryogenic Storage Systems (-190°C) for secure storage in vapour phase liquid nitrogen 

These systems are engineered to minimise manual handling, improve sample traceability, and enable reliable operation at scale. They are typically deployed in environments managing compound libraries, biologics, cell lines, and clinical specimens. In these settings, maintaining chain-of-custody and environmental control is essential.

Enabling Scalable Sample Management Infrastructure

As sample volumes increase and regulatory requirements become more stringent, laboratories are under increasing pressure. As a result, they must implement infrastructure that ensures consistent environmental control, secure sample tracking, and reproducible workflows.

Automated cold storage systems are increasingly central to meeting these requirements, particularly in high-throughput and long-term storage applications. Azenta’s platforms are designed to support this transition. In practice, this enables laboratories to move from manual or semi-automated processes to fully integrated, automated environments. These systems are deployed across a wide range of environments. This includes laboratories managing tens of thousands of samples as well as large-scale biobanks. Importantly, the solutions are designed to scale alongside operational requirements.

Strategic Expansion of Automation Capability

This partnership strengthens Mason Technology’s position in laboratory automation by adding globally deployed automated storage systems to its portfolio. The focus is on enabling Irish laboratories to access proven technologies that support scale, compliance, and operational efficiency in sample management.

Mason Technology will act as the local point of contact for specification and commercial engagement for Azenta Life Sciences in Ireland.  In practice, this includes supporting customers in identifying and specifying the most appropriate automated storage solutions based on sample types, throughput requirements, and laboratory workflows.
