Mass Spectrometry Imaging

Mass Spectrometry Imaging (MSI) is a cutting-edge technique that shows the spatial distribution of molecules like biomarkers, metabolites, peptides, and proteins within a sample. The process starts by collecting a mass spectrum at a specific spot on the sample. The sample then moves to a new region, and the process repeats until the entire sample is scanned. MSI uses ionization methods such as Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization (MALDI) and Desorption Electrospray Ionization (DESI) to ionize the molecules. The ions are detected and measured based on their mass-to-charge ratio, creating a detailed map of the sample’s molecular composition.

MSI is valuable in clinical research, pharmaceuticals, and environmental science. It provides high-resolution images that show the distribution of specific compounds within tissues or other complex matrices. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is an optical brain imaging technique. It allows functional imaging of brain activity by monitoring blood oxygenation and blood volume in the pre-frontal cortex, and can even assess multiple cerebral cortex locations selectively.
