LCMS
Liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LCMS) is an indispensable tool for quantitative and qualitative analysis in a wide range of fields, from pharmaceuticals and food science to environmental analysis. Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) is an advanced analytical technique. It combines the physical separation capabilities of liquid chromatography (LC) with the mass analysis capabilities of mass spectrometry (MS). This powerful combination allows for the precise identification and quantification of complex mixtures of compounds. In LC-MS, the sample is first separated by liquid chromatography. Components are divided based on their interactions with the mobile and stationary phases. Once separated, these components are introduced into the mass spectrometer, where they are ionized and detected based on their mass-to-charge ratio. This process provides detailed molecular information, including molecular weight, structure, and quantity of the sample components. Industries such as pharmaceuticals, environmental analysis, food safety, and clinical diagnostics are ideal for LCMS. This is due to its high sensitivity, specificity, and ability to analyze a wide range of compounds.

LCMS-2020 | Ultra Fast Liquid Chromatograph
The Shimadzu LCMS-2020 is optimized for the Prominence UFLC/UFLCXR Ultra Fast Liquid Chromatograph. Novel patent-pending technologies offer significantly enhanced scan speed and positive-negative ion polarity switching time, which are essential for UFLC, and simultaneously boost sensitivity. The instrument combines the excellent compound selectivity that is a feature of the mass spectrometer with significantly enhanced total productivity – from method development to analysis. The LCMS-2020 plays a useful role in a range of fields, including the synthesis of compounds in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries.
LCMS-2020 features
- UF Switching: To detect both positive and negative ions, analysis is performed while switching between the positive and negative ionization modes. The LCMS-2020 adopts patented high-voltage power supply technology (Patent: US7855355) to achieve an ultra-fast polarity switching time of just 15 msec.
- UF sensitivity: Superior sensitivity, repeatability, and linearity are achieved, thanks to the newly developed Qarray® optics.
- UFscanning: In MS scanning, a range of mass to charge ratios are determined in successive 0.1 m/z steps. This is controlled by applying a rapidly changing voltage to the quadrupole (quadrupole rods). By adopting Shimadzu’s proprietary scanning technology (Patent: US8188426), high ion transmission is achieved without sacrificing sensitivity or resolution, even during high-speed scans up to 15,000 u/sec. Very narrow UFLC peaks can now be properly detected in scan mode acquisition.

More About LCMS-TQ RX Series
LCMS-TQ RX Series
Shimadzu‘s LCMS-TQ RX Series expands the capability and productivity of triple quadrupole mass spectrometer with performance that can be relied upon. The RX Series has been designed to generate a highly focused ion beam from the ion source to detector bringing together advanced ion guide and collision cell technologies. The result is higher data quality that makes an impact on any LC-MS/MS assay
LCMS-TQ RX Series Overview
- Improving data reliability with high stability and measurement sensitivity
In mass spectrometers that ionize samples by spraying them, the uniformity of the spray affects the stability of measurements. The LCMS-TQ RX Series uses a newly developed CoreSpray nozzle in the ion source to make the spray uniform, thus improving the stability of analytical data. In addition, IonFocus* utilizes fluid analysis and electric field analysis technology to efficiently introduce ions into the MS, removing contaminant components and achieving a higher measurement sensitivity. - Streamlines lab operations through automatic calibration
The PERFORMANCE CONCIERGE function automatically checks the device status (e.g. mass accuracy, spectral intensity) before measurement begins and fine-tunes the device as needed. Optimal performance is thereby assured and downtime reduced. - Optimizes power consumption to reduce energy use and cost
In ecology mode, the instrument monitors its status and automatically shuts down when the device is not in use. Conventionally, the inside of the instrument continues to be heated even after measurements are finished. By minimizing this, power consumption is reduced by approximately 31 %.
* This proprietary Shimadzu ion source provides high sensitivity and durability by eliminating contaminant components. It does so through the efficient intake of ions to the mass spectrometer, utilizing the techniques of fluid and electric field analysis. Conventionally, only the LCMS-8060NX was equipped with this.
