Webinar Series: Discover the Latest in Microbiome Research with Don Whitley Scientific

Our partner Don Whitley Scientific (DWS), a leading manufacturer of specialised laboratory equipment for microbiology and cell culture applications, has added two new sessions in their Exploring the Microbiome webinar series. Designed for professionals working in microbiology, biomedical research and related fields, these webinars offer the opportunity to hear directly from researchers exploring new frontiers in microbiome science.

Each talk is a focused, half-hour session, providing a concise and informative experience without taking too much time out of your day. If the scheduled time isn’t convenient, there’s no need to miss out—every session will be recorded and shared with registered attendees. By signing up, you’ll receive a link after each event, so you can catch up whenever it suits you.

The upcoming sessions will cover topics ranging from sustainable strategies for gut microbiota modulation to the development of in vitro models of the human and porcine gut. Full details, including speaker biographies, scheduled dates and times, and registration links, can be found below.

Sustainable Solutions for Gut Microbiota Modulation: From Discovery to Application

Exploring the Microbiome with Dr Nelson Carvalho

I hold a BSc in Microbiology (2016), an MSc in Applied Microbiology (2018), and a PhD in Biotechnology with a specialization in Microbiology (2024) from the Faculty of Biotechnology, Universidade Católica Portuguesa.

During 2017-2018, I participated in an ERASMUS program at the University of Reading (United Kingdom) within the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences, investigating the in vitro impact of insect flours on the human gut microbiota, as part of my master’s thesis.

From 2019-2023, I worked as a Lab Assistant at Alchemy Project (a co-joined project between Amyris Bio Products Portugal and Universidade Católica Portuguesa), contributing to the development of animal and human gastrointestinal in vitro models to evaluate the bioactive properties present in ingredients produced from sugar cane by-products.

In 2020, I was accepted into a PhD program in Biotechnology with a specialization in Microbiology at the Faculty of Biotechnology of Universidade Católica Portuguesa. My doctoral research focuses on creating a comprehensive platform of in vitro models, known as the GIOTA platform, to accurately simulate both animal and human gastrointestinal tracts.

Currently, as a Research Assistant at Biorbis, I focus on developing sustainable bioactive ingredients derived from agro-industrial by-products. My expertise includes food microbiology, gut microbiota, prebiotics, probiotics, and gastrointestinal tract simulation, with a particular interest in the relationship between diet and the health of humans and animals.

I have extensive experience working in multidisciplinary teams and international collaborations, combining academic research with practical applications in biotechnology and the livestock industry.

I am committed to advancing sustainable solutions for health and nutrition and look forward to contributing further to this exciting field.

PhD MSc BSc

Faculty of Medicine and Health, School of Medicine, University of Leeds.

Tony completed his Ph.D. in 2007 investigating the molecular mechanisms of efflux pump-mediated antibiotics resistance in Salmonella Typhimurium at the University of Birmingham. During his years as a post-doctoral researcher, he never strayed from microbiology, working with gut pathogens, such as Campylobacter and C. difficile, developing vaccines, and the gut microbiota. He started in the department of Food Science & Nutrition in 2021 as a Lecturer in Food Microbiology. Tony has been fortunate enough to collaborate with a wide range of scientists from different disciplines, including engineering and geography, which has developed his research capabilities.

Tony now leads the Microbiome & Nutritional Sciences Group, as Associate Professor in Gut Microbiology. His team uses nutrition to modulate the host microbiome for better health benefits, covering 1) novel prebiotics, 2) the detrimental effects of nutrition, 3) ulcerative colitis, and 4) understanding the gut-brain axis. His group collaborates with nutrition, pharmaceutical and biotherapeutic industries, and academia. On a personal note, he has two wonderful children, who keep him busy, and loves to travel with his partner, Amanda.
