Whitley A135 GMP Anaerobic Workstation
Don Whitley Scientific has over 40 years of experience in the design and manufacture of anaerobic cabinets, and in 2013 developed the Whitley Internal HEPA Filtration System, primarily to serve our research customers. In collaboration with customers running GMP licensed facilities, we have now developed innovative uni-directional airflow technology, and successfully added this feature to an anaerobic workstation to create a unique product offering: a uni-directional airflow workstation that allows users to process samples under strict anaerobic conditions.
The A135 GMP Anaerobic Workstation is specifically designed to be used as a clean-air isolator in processes following Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). This microbiology isolator provides Grade A air cleanliness (EU GMP), combining sterile uni-directional airflow, positive operating pressure, and physical isolation to provide highly effective product protection. Unlike traditional isolators that use inlet air from the surrounding room, this workstation is a fully closed recirculating system so can be housed in a Grade D cleanroom during GMP compliant use.
Two sizes of airlock are available for this workstation: one is 17.5 litres and provides for the effective transfer of up to 10 x 500ml Duran bottles (or items of a similar size) to and from the chamber in just 2 minutes. The dimensions of this airlock are 197mm x 388mm x 190mm (W x D x H). The larger airlock is 43 litres (measuring 335 x 300 x 300mm) providing effective transfer for items of equipment or for up to 20 x 500ml Duran bottles in just 5 minutes.
With internal working area dimensions of (w x d x h): 1075 x 750 x 608mm, there is a generous amount of working space inside the workstation chamber to house equipment such as centrifuges and homogenisers. The patented oval glove ports provide maximum comfort when used over extended periods.
A135 GMP Anaerobic Workstation Features:
- This Grade A anaerobic isolator maintains strict anaerobic conditions, operating from two gas supplies for the most effective and efficient running costs.
- HEPA filter face velocity/uniformity of uni-directional airflow and Dispersed Oil Particulate (DOP) tests are carried out in accordance with ISO14644-3 to validate system integrity and performance. All tests are performed by an independent organisation.
- The GMP Workstation exceeds the requirements of Grade A air cleanliness (EU GMP) and ISO 14644-1 Class 3 both at rest and in operation.
- Whitley Intelligent Monitoring continually measures atmospheric downflow to ensure optimised filter performance.
- The ‘Standby’ feature (ECO mode) automatically decreases fan speed when the chamber is at rest to maximise energy efficiency.
- The large workstation chamber is perfect for accommodating a variety of items of equipment (removable front fitted as standard).
- A password-protected full-colour touch screen interface allows easy monitoring of all parameters simultaneously. Alarms and status notices are also displayed.
- This workstation is Ethernet-enabled for remote access review and control.

This workstation has two airlocks and allows you to control O2 in 0.1% increments up to 20%; CO2 in 0.1% increments up to 15%; and relative humidity up to 80%. This provides flexibility in your research and confidence in your results.
The H55 has four oval, sleeved portholes and two airlocks (one on the left and one on the right). Two people can easily work side-by-side in this chamber, in the same environmental conditions.
A HEPA filtered version of the H55 Hypoxystation is also available to provide levels of atmospheric cleanliness inside the workstation that exceed the requirements of ISO 14644 Class 3. All the atmosphere inside the chamber passes through the filter hundreds of times an hour, which ensure the chamber environment is cleaned quickly. The Enhanced Biological Containment system can also be specified. This option provides additional safeguards in reducing the possibility of bacteria contained inside workstations being released via the main chamber exhaust valve and the airlock exhaust valve.
If you need to aspirate biological liquid waste from inside the chamber, order with a Vacuum Take-off Port and the Whitley AsPROvac for the perfect package.
Options include:
- Single plate entry system
- Data logging and oxygen profiling capability
- Internal electrical sockets
If you want to be able to operate your workstation with two different temperature levels, specify the dual temperature option. This provides a central divider between the workstation chambers allowing you to select different temperatures for each side. A manually operated sliding door between the two chambers allows items to be passed from one area into the other.
Applications for this instrument include cancer research, stem cell research, cardiovascular research, as well as many other types of cell and tissue culture work.

More About Whitley Jar Gassing System
Whitley Jar Gassing System
With the Whitley Jar Gassing System you can create perfect conditions for growing anaerobes in jars in just 2 minutes for less than 18 pence and for microaerophiles in 15 seconds for less than 3 pence (compared with about £1.60 for every gas generating kit used).
A full colour touch screen control panel allows you to monitor, in real time, that the criteria necessary for the creation of either anaerobic or microaerobic conditions has been met.
The Whitley Jar Gassing System has an built-in fault detector to create an alert if a jar is leaking. It is essential that jars remain air tight to maintain conditions and that you have confidence that the jar will maintain the correct conditions throughout the incubation period. As the Jar Gassing System pulls a vacuum, it detects the jar is sealed by the speed that the vacuum is pulled (if the jar is leaking it will not be able to create a vacuum).
If you already have anaerobic jars that you wish to use you can order the adaptor kit, which will enable you to connect this anaerobic jar system to most types of jar.
Whitley Jar Gassing System Features:
- Reduces the cost of creating microaerobic conditions by 98% and anaerobic conditions by 89%.
- Reduces the time taken to create required conditions – gas packs can take up to an hour but the Jar Gassing system removes the atmosphere and replaces it with anaerobic mixed gas very quickly.
- It is easy to use (with instructions in English, German and French) so no complicated operator training is required.
- Jar uses low-temperature, re-usable catalyst sachets.
- Incorporates PIN code-protected user access levels for additional security.
- The optional printer provides you with a hard copy audit trail for accreditation purposes.

- a 48 Plate Jar with a 10-litre capacity (Order Code: A00002)
And the transparent, stackable Incubation Box (Order Code: A09740)
All our anaerobic jars are ideal for use with the Whitley Jar Gassing System.
The Whitley Jar Glassing System can create perfect conditions for growing anaerobes in jars in just 2 minutes for less than 18 cents and for microaerophiles in 15 seconds for less than 3 cents. It also has a built-in fault detector to create an alert if a jar is leaking. It is essential that jars remain airtight to maintain conditions and that you have confidence that the jar will maintain the correct conditions throughout the incubation period. As the Jar Gassing System pulls a vacuum, it detects the jar is sealed by the speed that the vacuum is pulled (if the jar is leaking it will not be able to create a vacuum).

Whitley Incubation Box
New from Don Whitley Scientific Incubation Box is the rectangular, transparent and stackable anaerobic ‘jar’. It can be used to create the perfect environmental conditions for the isolation and cultivation of anaerobic and microaerobic organisms and for cell culture applications.
The Whitley Incubation Box is ideal for use with the Whitley Jar Gassing System (evacuation/replacement method) or as a stand-alone system to use with gas generation sachets.
Because of the shape of the vessel, and as no connectors or valves protrude beyond the outer surface of the lid, Whitley Incubation Box’s can be stacked on top of each other inside an incubator or on the bench, saving valuable space. The main jar (without the lid in place and with no samples inside) can be nested with other empty jars so that work in progress takes up minimal space.
This anaerobic ‘jar’ will accommodate either 12-14 x 90mm Petri dishes or 5 x standard multi-well plates. The four latches used to open and close the box are attached to the lid so there are no loose parts to misplace.
The Whitley Incubation Box may be used to transfer items into and out of a Whitley Workstation and has been designed to fit through the 35-sized airlock and every larger Whitley airlock. This application is ideal when you want to move samples from one workstation to another and when you want to preserve your samples in modified atmospheric conditions while they continue to grow in an external incubator.
The design of the Whitley Incubation Box includes a safety valve, which ensures an appropriate level of vacuum is achieved without damaging the box itself. It is durable and lightweight and can be used to create multiple atmospheres.
Whitley Incubation Box Features:
- Accommodates both Petri dishes and multi-well plates.
- Both lids and bases can be nested for storage.
- Flexibility to create different atmospheric conditions.
- Latches are permanently attached to the lid so there are no loose parts to misplace.
- The completed box can be stacked on top of each other for incubation.
- The rectangular shape saves space in the incubator.
- Includes a safety valve to ensure an appropriate level of vacuum is achieved without damaging the box itself.
- Durable and lightweight.

More About Whitley WASP Touch®
Whitley WASP Touch®
The Don Whitley Scientific WASP Touch ® is a precision laboratory instrument designed to deposit accurate volumes of liquid sample in an Archimedes spiral onto the surface of a rotating agar plate. Spiral plating is well documented and validated as an effective method for the enumeration of microorganisms.
Designed for the needs of modern microbiology laboratories, the WASP Touch® is a fundamentally different spiral plater with no need for a separate vacuum source. With touchscreen operation the system is extremely simple to use and provides real cost savings and process improvements.
Whether you are working in the field of dental research, food microbiology, calculating antimicrobial concentration (MICs) or studying the microbiome, this robust, reliable device could really save time and money in your laboratory.
WASP Touch® provides Automated Intelligent Monitoring Software (AIMS) to guide you through set-up and daily check routines – ensures consistent trouble-free plating. Precise quantities of sanitising fluids are dispensed automatically to maintain optimum levels. This ensures effective and efficient sanitisation takes place.
The deposition profiles possible with WASP Touch® allow bacterial and fungal colonies to be enumerated over a 100,000-fold (5 log10) range, from a minimum of 20 cfu/ml in 1000 μl pour plate mode to a maximum of 2 x 106 cfu/ml in 10 μl logarithmic mode. An optional Extended Volume Package is available, however, to allow for a greater number of replicates plates, linear deposition profile and a wider range of deposition profiles.
Spiral plating techniques are recognised in ISO 4833-2 & 7218 as well as the AOAC 977.27 standard.
Optional fully comprehensive maintenance and breakdown contracts are available to prolong the life of your investment. (Note: different arrangements apply in different countries).
